Anyone else notice that sharpie markings on golf balls don't last like they used to? I find black better than most other colours in terms of durability, and blue pens wash off in a hole or two. Is it that golf ball covers have changed or is there a better (more permanent) marker that can be had? P

I think it could be both. Some makes of balls have a surface that doesn't absorb the mark as well as others. Plus some "permanent" markers, like the ones you get for $1 a pack at the Dollar store, aren't as good as the more expensive ones, like Sharpie brand that I usually use.
It may not be necessary, but I also use a sponge and soapy water to wash a brand new ball before I mark it, figuring there might be a very thin coating of some substance from the manufacturing process that might reduce the effectiveness of the marker.
I think it's mainly the ball. I agree that they don't stay marked as long or as easily. I try to mark them (with Sharpie brand marker) well in advance of playing. If I mark them right before teeing off … it comes off. I guess it needs time to adhere/absorb/dry?
It's been that way for a while. When I was playing a lot of tournament golf, I used to buy the Sharpie Lab markers. They seemed a bit more durable in terms of fading or washing off, but even they weren't perfect. Marking them the night before helps. But if there's a lot of dew or you end up hitting the mark with the club, it's going to rub a bit.
It helps if you make a mark that is contained within a dimple. In other words, if you make dots, be sure to put them in a dimple and they will last longer, especially if you strike the ball on the mark.
nrjyzr: Black Toaster of Death. I remember posting a pic of one next to my KZG MP driver, at a whopping 230cc. Then the Integra 400 happened...

jaime59: I went through the Bertha progressions: Big Bertha, Great Big Bertha, Biggest Big Bertha which was a massive 290 cc iirc. Also had Taylor Made Ti in there. Eventually I ended up with the Biggest Big Bang, or whatever it was called at 525cc.
